Joy in the pain

Yep - last night was hard - the hardest one yet! When I got back to the hospital this morning, they had the pain more controlled and he was in decent spirits.

Randy and I headed down to grab him some b'fast and when we got back up to his room the Physical Therapist had him sitting in a wheelchair!!!! THE BEST THING I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME!!!!! We wheeled him downstairs and outside and showed him the helipad where he arrived almost 2 weeks ago. He was exhausted when we got back - but what a HUGE step!! We have a few more hurdles to pass before we can get him home, but everyone here says we'll be able to do it - lots of work, but they are encouraging us to get him home.

Today my brother Martin, wife Jacquee and son Oscar came up from Portland to visit . Nathan enjoyed chatting with them and it was so good to see them!

Pray for Nathan's frustration level as every day he realizes more and more how broken he is.

Pray for Randy and I as we learn how to do "this".

I can't wait to get home and cook for my family, have friends come by, and enjoy the healing process God is going to bring us all through!!

We continue to covet your prayers! God is so faithful - even in the dark times I am so aware of His constant presence!

Looking forward to the day that Nathan arrives home. His little buddy wants to see him so bad. I told him he had to wait until Nay-Nay made it home. Hope Nathan's up to some cartoons with a 4-1/2 year old! :)

Keep working hard Nathan! It's going to be tough at times but you can do this! We love you and will continue praying!!

woo-hoo! Can you cook for Craig and me too when you get home???!! :) We'll sit and be cared for along side Nathan - just to be a support. Seriously, God is good and all glory is due Him. Love ya Debbie-doo

Janice, I'm pretty sure you went to BCS with my sister Christy. Our maiden name was Holmes.

I just ran across this and I am so grateful that your son's spine and brain are okay, and so sorry for all that you and he are enduring. We've done the airlift/Harborview/ICU experience. and it is a hard one.

This article is late, but it still may help your other readers find ways to bless and support you during this time. I wrote it after my Dad got seriously hurt: How to Support a Family with a Medical Emergency that lands them in I.C.U.

May the Lord's mercy and grace continue to be poured out upon your family each and every day.

Suzanne

Hi Randy and Janice,
Just learned about your blog spot a few days ago, and it is so nice to know what is going on. My hearts go out to you!!! We will continue to hold you all up in our prayers. I know the difference prayer makes, when Michael was 2 weeks in Harborview back in 1999 the prayers moved mountains for us, and kept pain bearable. You are such a Woman of Faith!! I am learning to know you better through this. If we can do anything, be sure to ask. We look forward to having you home again!! In God's perfect timing though. Lou and Alice VanderGiessen

Still reading your blog, dearie. You're better than KING 5 News!

Try not to worry about Nathan's frustration level. You want him to be frustrated, actually. He'll work harder to get back to normal, that way. If he were content to lie in bed and let them work on him, his healing and recovery would be much slower. I know it's hard to deal with, and sometimes just plain unpleasant, but the frustration is a gift as well as the pain. (When we get to heaven, we can ask God about his choice in gifts!)

Speaking of pain, I'm so glad to see that his pain is better. That alone will help his frustration!

I'm still praying for all of you.

Cynthia
